I mean he tried to later redeem himself by sacrificing his life when fighting boo. He was frustrated at that point, as goku and gohan had outshined him when fighting cell and bobbidi used that latent frustration and evil inside him. The transition from proud evil warrior who would kill innocents to just defeat his rival to the warrior who would give up his pride and fuse with his rival to save earth was one of the most perfect character development I have seen in any anime.

Murata does tend to exaggerate perspective (in this case the perspective relative to the earth's curvature). Think giant Darkshine like 15 chapters ago. If he really was lets say 200km long, sage centipede would have a body 4000 times longer than his head width (if we assume 50m head width). I'm not saying it's impossible, but the drawing doesn't show a ratio even near that.
