I believe it's an antique railroad lantern. Some of them are highly sought after collectables. It looks like it's connected to Elkhart, Indiana. The National New York Central Railroad Museum is there, as well as the historical Elkhart and Western Railroad.
My sister and I got religious pamphlets/activity books and pencils one year. It turned out that the guy that handed them out was a pentecostal minister. Several parents were upset about it, and a bunch of kids went back and egged his house. We learned to skip his house after that.
