  1. Some people may question the idea of spending time on a Metro train for fun.

  2. People drive for fun, why not metro for fun? You can even go to Wheaton and ride the escalators, if that's your thing.

  3. Most if not all of the actual DC lines are pretty much underground. The yellow line between the airport and Lenfant Plaza is cool since you see the airport and cross the river. Weekend parking is free and all fares are $2 so getting off and exploring is nice too. Could do that run on the train then enjoy some time on the mall or on the wharf, both accessible from Lenfant.

  4. Tea is a beverage made by pouring hot or boiling water over leaves.

  5. Also, there's one that looks like a teardrop tatoo. That's got a really bad meaning. At least only one.

  6. Coastal rowing is much less expensive for the host country, since they don’t have to build an Olympic standard 2,000m multiple lane racecourse that no matter how perfect, someone will say isn’t fair. It also makes the sport available to more people, which has been a problem for rowing generally. And it’s fun as hell to watch, and rough water just makes it more fun.

  7. Most large cities are built along navigable rivers though. Why not just do a river race rather than a coastal one?

  8. Rowing can bring in the crowds. Just look at the Boat Race. For a period at the turn of the 19th century it was a massively popular sport, with professionals earning huge sums and often doubling up as world-renowned bare knuckle boxers.

  9. But the Boat Race isn't exactly flat either. You have to take into account the twists and turns of the river and the river is often quite wild compared to a lot of defined lakes used in competition. That's what makes it interesting.

  10. Here's how you can find that the tide is High. It seems to be a little higher than usual on Saturday, near the "alert" zone:

  11. Look, there’s another article on there that’s basically litigation consulting for a family pissed their daughter didn’t stay in bounds at a Swiss ski resort, so who even knows

  12. It looks like that was more of a dedicated backcountry area. But yes, it does seem to place the blame heavily on the school, and not the fact that she sought out this high-risk activity.

  13. Now if only they'd stay off the sidewalks and stop driving through crosswalks with 0 regard for pedestrians

  14. I've seen quite a few that were a lot more cautious then you'd normally expect for anyone in DC transit. There are also quite a few that are reckless.

  15. I think plans A, B and C would also need to be public terms rather than secrets else it hints at things they were good at keeping out of the public eye.

  16. Correct within an order of magnitude. Good enough for astronomers.

  17. It's a stupid poster. Smarmy and condescending. Definitely not helping the cause.

  18. How many people drove across the San Francisco Bay before the Golden Gate Bridge was built?

  19. Yes and no. Commercial is definitely way MORE of a net tax revenue driver than residential - IIRC the downtown BID published some numbers that pre-pandemic downtown accounted for 25% of the revenue and under 10% of the expenses for the district, so ~3x ROI for the district govt. But those office workers are simply never gonna be back in the same numbers so it’s a moot point.

  20. There's more property taxes, yes, but the residents of residential properties pay income taxes, too.

  21. You gotta sleep harder, dude. Sleep like you mean it!

  22. just out of curiosity, when do you think a 1x will leave a cyclist wanting of a lower gear? mountains in Shenandoah?

  23. It depends also on what you're doing. If biking is your transportation, maybe you don't want to have to dig into the red zone after a grocery trip.

  24. A lot also depends on your preferred cadence. I tend to do 90-100 RPM for cadence, so I have some serious granny gears. It also depends on your total system weight, if you're carrying a lot or you are a lot, then a higher gear range matters. If you're tiny, riding unloaded, and comfortable grinding, then you could probably even do singlespeed.

  25. Martin Luther King Library. Get off at 9th and G st exit of Gallery Place and you are right by it

  26. Yep. Though you'd likely have better luck finding a room at a branch library. The MLK library does have the cool factor.

  27. Not only do they have rooms you can reserve but there is a quiet section in the library as well. To be honest though, I think it's ridiculous that a library even needs a quiet area to begin with.

  28. They have punk rock concerts on the roof. It's not always quiet.

  29. Until 2019, nuclear missile launch facilities used floppy disks to initiate the launch procedure. Compared to that, this is lightyears ahead. And it was the really old big floppies that were actually floppy.

  30. That actually sounds much safer than a lot of other options.

  31. Parking violations are about the only thing that has a prompt response time, often less than an hour.

  32. I reported one for parking right outside a bus shelter and got a prompt response, basically "not our problem anymore".

  33. Oh GOD, I moved here from a “which high school did you go to” city. On the one hand it was kind of amusing to watch people try to process the fact that I hadn’t gone to any high school they’d be familiar with, but on the other hand the number of people who needed that information just to decide whether or not it was worth their time to make small talk with me was dismal.

  34. I don't even understand that question, especially in DC, that's usually several levels of education below where they are at. Loads of people have advanced degrees, high schools aren't even remotely relevant.

  35. It's still a thing just wrapped differently. In blue collar cities ( i used to live in bmore, mke) its ehat hs you went. In dc it's your profession that's the critical biographic information. I meam really...whens the last time you met some in dc who didmt ask you what do for a living at the top of your conversation.

  36. Honestly, it's pretty rare that I'm asked. I've gone whole conversations without that question coming up. I think it's a backlash against that question.

  37. Harris Teeter. It's got high prices and terrible food.

  38. VRE with better service would be awesome though. There's a bunch of really nice towns that would be great for day trips for those who live in DC. However, as is, it's only useful for certain commuters.

  39. Ideally, there should be a special bus service during the blooms that would take you to the various points of interest, to allow those with mobility issues or are just lazy to see them.

  40. There’s places you can ban cars, but not within all of DC limits. Downtown where there’s great Metro access? Sure.

  41. With the proper infrastructure, we can ban them there too!

  42. Guess you haven’t been to metro center, pentagon city, McArthur when the heat helps to radiant the smell of urine. Greasy head prints on windows are the least to worry about in the metro cars. You want to see what a metro transit can aspire to? Go to Japan, the cleanliness and maintenance is incredible. WM is a money pit nothing more nothing less. But I do applaud their efforts to make it better and safer.

  43. I'd kinda like to see mercury-infused bike locks to offgas those fuckers

  44. What if a police officer or designate is removing those locks because the bicycle is blocking traffic or someone decides to use a bike lock to obstruct a door? There's a lot of legal and ethical issues with that.
