  1. I’m a husband and a dad. You’re absolutely NTA. He’s a dick for putting himself before you at (what will) be 2 weeks out.

  2. I have no degree and work in IT. In my industry, there’s a lot more focus on soft skills than ever before. You can do certification programs to learn the tech stuff, or even pick it up through experience, but soft skills are harder. You either are wired the right way to excel in communication and interpersonal skills (eg empathy), or you have to learn that somehow. I’d bet good money that you can learn some of this stuff in a degree program, but one that’s probably not related to tech.

  3. Edit: The publication in question left out an important element that needs addressing before we can raise our arms in excitement.

  4. I heard that fiber optic cables used for network interconnects were also a source of data to monitor for earthquakes. The shifts in the earth can apparently be measured (probably due to data transmission errors) along the fiber cables.

  5. I’ve got a 1520+ that runs like a champ for everything you want to do as well as a bunch other stuff. I did add a couple 256GB M2 drives for SSD cache and I did add extra RAM, but for your use case you may not need it. Always really easy to add later though.

  6. FWIW, if you're only using DSM as a file server and a host for other non-Synology services/apps, then you're probably better off using an open source NAS distro which can be virtualized without "complications." I can't remember exactly if virtualized DSM is basically illegal or not, but I do know from personal experience that upgrading virtualized DSM was a pain and resulted in needing to completely rebuild the VM and lose all the data (it was a backup target so no data was permanently lost).

  7. Assuming you’re connecting to the VM from DSM itself, I’m guessing you don’t be able to get sound since there’s no hardware soundcard in the NAS that the VM can map to. It might work if you connect directly to the VM from another PC with a soundcard using VNC or something.

  8. Yeah? Is that because there would be a few moments during the reboot when outside stuff might be coming through the ONT?

  9. I doubt it. When a router boots, it’ll typically load its firewall before enabling the Ethernet interfaces, specifically so no unintended traffic is let in. That’s not to say all routers work this way, but in my professional experience this is true.

  10. Nevermind the fact that it was a double album and that pop shit like Britney was fucking massive at the time

  11. Pop has always been massive. It couldn’t be pop otherwise. IMO, the existence of pop isn’t the problem — some people just truly don’t like complex serious music, and that’s totally ok!

  12. True except for Closer. And all you need in the charts is one song.

  13. And when TDS came out, it kinda fit in with the music scene at the time. The Fragile didn’t, and I don’t think ever would.

  14. Synology’s implementation of Volume encryption is not safe at all. It’s much better to use Encrypted folders.

  15. https://global.synologydownload.com/download/Document/Software/WhitePaper/Package/StorageManager/All/enu/Synology_Volume_Encryption_White_Paper_enu.pdf

  16. Makes sense. According to the white paper, the key can be stored externally, but unfortunately it’s limited to another NAS. I’m surprised they haven’t created a small desktop agent for Win/Mac/Linux that can house the key so folks with a single NAS (probably majority of their customer base) can use this feature.

  17. I volunteer with a rescue squad. Everyone has a rush of shit for brains when you’re behind them and running emergency traffic. My favorite was a guy who was towing a farm implement. He stopped dead on top of a hill in a 55 mph zone so we could pass…when we couldn’t see over or around him to do so.

  18. A lot of people lack common sense and follow the old guidance of “pull over immediately when you see an emergency vehicle!” Makes more sense to say “pull over asap when it’s safe for you and safe for the emergency vehicle to pass.”

  19. I know you don’t want another container, but Watchtower does a great job of checking for new images and recreating your containers when there’s an update. It’s super low overhead (technical and administrative), and you can setup notifications to Slack/Discord if that’s important to you.

  20. Thanks, but Watchtower is a command line tool. It's not clear what Watchtower does with dockers built using compose.yamls. I have homepage and there is a widget for it, but I'd like to be able to see what's going on - I'm a bit old school that I need to see something to know how it works and have the control over when it updates. I don't always want the latest version.

  21. I hear you. FWIW, I use Watchtower with notifications to Discord as well as labels. Most of my containers are allowed to auto update, however I use labels in a few so Watchtower will tell me there’s a new version but will not auto update. That way I can read release notes and update manually when that service isn’t being used. Very helpful for managing Plex and my Ubiquiti UniFi network controller.

  22. Totally! The first (of the new ones) should’ve been a Reznor/Ross score. Haven’t watched the second one yet…

  23. Maybe a dumb question…I get why the white measuring tape/scale is there, but what purpose does the yellow one serve, and is its angle intentional?

  24. Yeah I get that the yellow rod shows the trajectory, but what’s the yellow ruler for?

  25. That's my next step. Docker has so many advantages once you learn it. I'm willing to put in some extra time setting something up if I get more control and protection from it every time.

  26. I recommend Portainer for ongoing management of you Docker environment. You deploy it as a container, and it’s far better than Container Manager. You can use the Stacks function to deploy containers via Docker Compose, and it makes it really easy to redeploy a container as you need to make configuration changes, which happens a lot as you’re learning Docker.

  27. Quickconnect is perfectly safe. Ther are other methods with stronger security protocols, but QuickConnect is NOT insecure.

  28. Yeah that’s kinda what I thought. I suppose the biggest risk is trusting Synology’s infrastructure and their security.

  29. The reason you remember the 90s as being awesome is probably because you were a kid and were shielded from the struggles of people then.

  30. I’m an older millennial and remember the major struggles pretty well. You’re right, there were many, but I think OP’s point still stands, in that there was a lot of good stuff too. Nowadays though, it seems like wall to wall shit. The racial issues in this country are still as bad as the 90s (likely worse), there’s the extreme political polarization that has happened, we’re still dealing with the impact of 2008, we had a pandemic, we have insane inflation with stagnated wages…

  31. Ah damn. Wtf. They have been going downhill, especially with customer service, ever since I started using their NAS.

  32. Synology don’t do a great job of making the latest Plex Media Server package available. If you’re able to run Docker on your NAS, running Plex as a container is the better option. I use the Docker image that’s maintained my linuxserver.io and never have any issues. They usually release updates every couple of weeks and follow Plex’s official releases.

  33. I'm not sure what a docker is or how to do that unfortunately. Care to share how?

  34. This guide provides instructions on the 3 different ways to installing Plex: 1) Synology’s package, 2) the official Plex package for Synology devices, or 3) as a Docker container.

  35. I've had a lot of trouble with this feature, and I'm not sure it even works properly. It sounds like you're experiencing a different symptom of the same problem. Not that I necessarily need different EQs, as I mostly either use the same set of wired headphones or I cast to a multimedia center where I don't care about the EQ.

  36. It’s all working perfectly for me, in that my EQ levels for each output device get used every time I connect that device without any manual intervention.

  37. So I think I figured out my issue, I have it set for all my speakers so when I connect it automatically enables split audio so that only my music apps come out of the bluetooth speaker, all other sound on my phone comes out of the phone speaker. So if I'm playing music through my speaker, and I watch a video on reddit, it won't pause the song, the song will keep playing out of the speakers uninterrupted, and the video will play out of my phone speakers

  38. Hi, thank you for your help! I was thinking up to around 1500€ for starters (might upgrade or buy additional drives later on) Currently it’s about 15-20TB And the growth rate depends on the projects but I think there could be aprox. 5-10TB of data per year that I would need to have stored (it’s possible that there will be more and more in the future but let’s ignore that for now). I’m not sure I understand, what other apps are possible? But primarily for data storage yes. I don’t know what else is possible tbh so hard to tell 😅

  39. So a rough bill of materials would be a 1621+ with 4x Ironwolf 8TB drives. As a SHR volume, you’d get 21.8TB of space, and the total price from B&H Photo (a well known US retailer) would be $1750USD including taxes. It’s a bit over your budget, but you get the space you need today and still have 2 more unused slots to increase storage in the future.

  40. Personally home cooking skills, simplying your consumption into actual food and not hyper processes slop (basically all snack foods are terrible for you) blocking doordash and uber-eats is what I recommend for that on a individual level, who knows if enough people do that the cultural change might be large enough to solve it.

  41. Teaching moderation is more useful than saying you shouldn’t do/eat X in most situations. Moderation is a result of self control, and self control is very helpful outside the context of consumption, it also helps with emotional regulation.

  42. See I'm of the opinion when it comes to food delivery service most people just aren't capable of using them responsibly and end up either very fat and/or very much in credit card debt (if you are you'll know because you're not either of those things)

  43. Yeah makes sense if the damage is already done. I suppose I’m coming from the preventative perspective

  44. Sounds like there’s a secondary DNS server at play. Does this behavior happen on all devices on the network or just some (like mobile)? Does the DHCP server have anything other than 1.1.1.3 defined for DNS?

  45. Plex had OpenSubtitles SRT available and they're synced up pretty good. Do you know of any good tutorials that show how to add SRT subtitles to the source file?

  46. I don’t know any tutorials, but I figured it out a while back. Assuming your source files are MKV and you’re on Windows:

  47. Syncing can be a problem. That’s why I prefer to use the PGS image file that’s present in most Blu-ray releases and convert it to SRT myself, so I know the sync will be perfect.
