Cam angle sensor. CAS. Get a new o ring for it. It will probably be damaged or is already damaged from age. That is where you adjust timing when you turn it when its loose so just put a couple sharpie marks in different spots to make sure its right where it needs to be. Or just check timing. On the drivers side fender is a small connector that goes nowhere. May be blue or black. Its a positive contact to connect a timing light to it since the battery is in the trunk. And then put the earth (-) side to something metal like the engine hoist location.

I must ask, why are you buying an open diff to install? The diffs rarely ever fail on a Miata so unless it's an emergency why aren't you putting a limited slip in if you're already into a diff install?
I'd still go straight for a limited slip, you don't wanna go through the hassle of a diff swap just to have a slightly neutered experience, limited slips make a huge difference in these cars and they were stock in a lot of models and almost all the JDM ones, do yourself a favour and put a proper diff in it!
