This is sad. I think a lot of us in the poker community have dealt with this. I personally have dealt with it more than a few times, but one time sticks out more than others: I was owed $10k by my cousin, my own family. Unfortunately him repaying me the debt became the least of my concerns, as he spiraled out of control in more ways than one (gambling + drug addiction, with the latter being completely hidden- he hadn't even been a drinker up to that point).
I think the enigma of Persson is that he seems to have it all, and yet he seems profoundly unfulfilled in some way. It would appear that gambling seems to be filling some insatiable hole in him, and I believe that insatiable hole is his insatiable ego.
