  11. Not a movie. But Mike Flanagan’s writing in Midnight Mass. He has one monologue in particular that felt like a warm blanket in regards to what happens when we die. I don’t want to mention any spoilers but I’m a big believer in poetry and writing being the thing that distinguishes us from other creatures. Our storytelling capabilities are innately human. And his writing for that show was as human as it gets.

  12. To answer your question, any writing that viscerally and skillfully gets to the heart of what makes us all human and what we can all relate to on a foundational level is the good stuff and I consider Mike Flanagan and his time auteurs at that skill.

  20. Downsizing. We were teased by all sorts of the sights the first half. I wanted more, I wanted to know everything about tiny people and then I was robbed by the second half of the film.

Riley's perspective worked best for giving us an introduction to the island as an outsider, and he had personal links to the most other characters and especially Pruitt so following him gives easy ways to develop the other characters as well ("oh hi so and so, we've been doing such and such for the last few years", boom, easy backstory and exposition opportunities).
