I am glad the park noticed this as beneficial pollinators. Most parks have bald-faced hornet nests removed but they’re very important for the ecosystem and they’re native. Unlike honeybees, which are actually invasive and are worse at pollination then bald-faced hornets.
Ant nerd here, this is an Atta sp. queen ant! They are better known as leaf-cutter ants because they cut leaves and feed them to the fungus they grow underground. Workers can come in many different sizes and colonies can get hundreds of thousands of workers at a mature size and they can make incredibly long trails. This genus is one of the larger species of ants and are very cool. Founding them (the process of getting the queen to her first workers) is a bit of a challenge, they like to die for absolutely no reason besides maybe stress. They are a pretty expensive species with prices ranging from $100-$500 outside of their native range.
Bless you and your love of ants. I am more of a Blattodea girl myself. I have such a hard time with ID for ants, I'm guessing it's due to their size and how different one species can be from another solely on how many segments are on their antennae and their nodes. It's just so much information to remember! Either way, this is a beautiful specimen and thank you for teaching me something new today.
My dad hates cats but here he is, 5 cats later. He feeds them and cares for them. They grew on him. Maybe you could give it a chance? I don’t really see a problem besides the fact they they set you up to it
Not paper wasps, they have exposed comb and don’t get nearly as large and aggressive as Yellowjackets/hornets.
