  1. There are many types of "Football", so they need to be distinguished. Soccer is one, but there are others such as Australian Rules, American, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Gaelic, Futsal and others. To those most familiar with each of those, they will just call them "Football" and use other names for the other ones. In the USA, and some other countries, the term "Soccer" is used for Association Football.

  2. "Are you sure it is a cuckoo clock? Let me have a look."

  3. "I had an interview last week. I heard yesterday that I got the job. Guess who's going to be the new boss around here."

  4. Practice, practice, practice. Throw a ball in the air and try to catch it. Throw it against a high wall and catch it when it bounces back. Get someone to kick a ball to you and try to catch it. Use gloves if that helps.

  5. "I nearly had to cancel, but I got out on bail about an hour ago. The case will proceed when my ex gets out of hospital and she is fit to go to court. I heard that her bruises are improving. My fist still hurts though. Anyway how are you?"

  6. I was thinking, there are only about five of my ex-girlfriends that are better looking than you, so you rank highly.

  7. It is a remote location and not served by public transport. You most commonly hear about it in winter traffic reports, when it is reported as being impassable. So it is not easy to get to without your own transport unfortunately, unless you want to walk or cycle.

  8. You are 34 and still a virgin? I would say that in about 20 or 30 years from now, you might have start worrying about that. At this stage though, you have decades of time to get on with life with no worries about things like that. That's what a young person like you should be doing, so get out and enjoy life and stop worrying about trivial things like your virginity.

  9. Some years I do it extremely early, as much as one week before Christmas Day. Usually though, I start at a more reasonable and normal and very sufficiently early time, about three or even as much as four days beforehand. A busy time, as it is getting close to the time to start putting up decorations. I have to admit though, that sometimes they have gone up extremely early, as much as week before Christmas Day, which is obviously insanely early to be doing it. Christmas Day is a Wednesday this year, which might mean starting the shopping and putting up decorations as early as Saturday the 21st. Madness, I know.

  10. That is 23 threads. There are nearly 500 million people in North America. If people have a nasty opinion, they will post it. If they don't have a bad opinion, which is the vast majority of people, they don't post. So what you are seeing is not even slightly representative of reality. Millions of British tourists go around the world, with the vast majority having positive experiences and welcomes. Like them, whatever you might think, so will you. Do not try to change your accent. There is absolutely no reason to do so. Those threads are not evidence of the level of hate that you think. It is a miniscule minority of hundreds of millions of people.

  11. The Arlington on Bachelors Walk, for some music. Piper's Corner on Marlborough Street, for the same reason. The Oval and The Palace are nice pubs nearby too. Plenty of others to choose from if you walk around the area. A pub crawl will give you a wider sample. Although the Palace is at the start of Temple Bar, don't go any further, as the pubs are very touristy and expensive. Walk through the area and sample the atmosphere, but spend your money elsewhere.

  12. If something bad happens, people post about it. If nothing bad happens, which is the majority of the time, people don't post about it. That is why you read bad things here. Maybe someone was mugged today, but thousands weren't. Dublin is a very safe city.

  13. I am glad you enjoyed your visit. It is nice to get some feedback from the people who visit Ireland. Tell your family and friends, and come back again. You can see the west coast then.

  14. To be honest, what Isreal is doing, indiscriminately slaughtering men, women, and children, is accurately described as genocide -> killing an entire demographic of people.

  15. It didn't start on the 7th of October. It started decades ago. The 7th of October was just the most recent instance. Was what Hamas did right? Of course not, but it didn't come out of nowhere. Israel has been doing all sorts of things like evicting people from their land into refugee camps, building settlements on that land, killing people and much more for decades. Do those kinds of things to people for long enough and of course they'll fight back. That is what Hamas has been doing. As I said, this has been going on for decades, not since the 7th of October.

  16. You are making the common mistake of thinking that if there is a God, then the world should be perfect. God did create a perfect world, but this isn't it. It is called Heaven.

  17. "My brother would have loved this restaurant, but he is delicious."

  18. There are shades of blue, like navy or sky, but there is no one shade that could be called blue. When shown together, the second one could be described as light blue, but on its own a lot of people would just say it was blue.

  19. As has been said, Irish people don't take offence easily, so you don't need to worry much. Just use your common sense and don't do anything you would not do at home. Don't kidnap anyone, no axe murders, no bank robberies or mugging old grannies. If you avoid those kinds of things, which I am sure you will, you will be fine. Enjoy your visit.

  20. If you are going to tap with the driver, you usually say where you are going. From the airport in your case, you would just say "City centre". The locals would be more able to name specific places on journeys. Usually it is just the €2 and you will see most people tap on for that.

  21. I'm considering buying single use tickets with coins when I'm going on public transport, because I won't use it so often. I love that idea, actually! Normally I'd do a bike tour but I'm not sure whether they offer these in Dublin, I'll look into that.

  22. As someone who is more than twice your age has said, it is not too late. Hurling is a skillful game, so you will need lots of practice, both in training sessions and any time on your own that you can. All you need is a wall to hit the ball against. The other kids will have a major advantage over you, but do not let that put you off. You will improve. Go for it.

  23. I doubt he’s doing it fully of his own volition though, he has clearly been enabled or instructed by Gallagher in the past and now Mickey.

  24. Well let's hope that they cop on to the obvious flaw and stop telling him to do it. In the last few years we have seen lots of goalkeepers going outfield and lots of balls kicked into unguarded goals. It is not the first time Derry have been caught, most notably by Damien Comer in the 2022 All-Ireland semi-final against Galway.

  25. You would not use that construct. You would say:

  26. “Next Tuesday week” isn’t a good phrasing.

  27. Not for you, but very standard where I come from. We all speak the language differently.

  28. You are trying to pack a lot in. Getting off a trans-Atlantic flight and into a car with jet lag, driving a different car, driving on the other side of the road and trying to navigate, is not a good idea. Trim Castle is a bit of a detour if going from Dublin to Galway. Spend that first day in Dublin and head to Galway the next day or at least get a bus to Galway on your arrival at the airport and let someone else do the driving.

  29. The biggest event that weekend is some visiting American Football teams playing a game on that Saturday. Other than that, there is little on. There is the soccer on Friday night. Shelbourne v Bohemians is a big local derby on that Friday evening. You might catch some local club Gaelic Football or

  30. Absolutely. They don't check people's credentials at the door. Other people have mentioned a few guidelines when you do get in, but there is nothing to stop you going in.
