You should start from the beginning. There’s many amazing moments/plots of the original LOGH that do not appear at all in DNT. My recommended watch order is My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, Overture to a New War (replaces the first two episodes), and then starting the OVA from episode 3.
Try shaving against the grain on the first pass, I had this problem too, but ended up liking my beard instead. Don't push the blade, just let it glide on top of your face, extra points if you do it a little to the sides instead of strictly upwards.
