What edition are you on? I'm on Bedrock 1.20.8 I think and I can use glass to go down, just not upside down slabs. It's my only tool for going down since slabs and torch towers only go up. If you're going down like that, you may as well use a solid block but switching back and forth you'll need the glass, I've got nothing man I'm confused

There are fewer mobs in bedrock, but... The default simulation distance is 4 chunks (and fixed on realms). For performance reasons on lower end devices. Mobs spawn in a range that's just 24-44 blocks from the player and insta despawn beyond 44 blocks. That means they tend to spawn closer to you and the mob cap is freed up very quickly as you move around
