You also get karma for giving awards. I spend like $20 every 6 months or so and use the small awards as little dopamine doses for myself and the person I award. It's like telling the girl you're walking past in a parking lot that the green of her dress looks amazing with her red hair, and seeing her light up with a smile. It just makes you both happy. The majority of my karma is awarder karma.
