I still cringe about this. I once tried to remember the name of the Kumari Devi, which is a living goddess worshiped by both Hindus and Buddhists in Nepal, I believe. A pre-pubescent girl is chosen as the manifestation of the divine goddess, and is then worshiped for a period of time—until she starts menstruating, I think. Super fascinating from a theological perspective.
i know what you are on about, i was visitin Nepal with my family and we entered this random temple near our hotel which just so happened to be this specific temple, we got in and we were allowed to talk to the girl, she had a private tutor with her. Her room was basically just upstairs of the side of the temple. It wasnt hygienic at all. We asked how they select the Devi and it was through a ritual where they have a bunch of infants or toddlers view the beheading of a cow? (Im not sure its been 3 years) and the kid who doesn't flinch gets selected as the Kumari Devi. I remember there being a massive fish tank in that dingy room.
