It seems like he has a high energy level, so I would try to accommodate that with lower impact activities (leash walking, fetch in an enclosed yard instead of a big field, brain games and training). Of course going ham at the dog park is fun for him- just enforce breaks when he starts to breath heavily and avoid exercise at higher temperatures.
