Kava and Depression

Kava (Piper mythysticum) was historically consumed during Polynesian religious rites for its ability to relax and soothe the mind. Kava was also used for its medicinal effects including as a sedative. In an experimental double-blind study, 58 patients received either Kava extract (100 mg. t.i.d.) or a placebo over a four week period. The Hamilton-Anxiety scale overall score of anxiety and other anxiety scales revealed a significant reduction in the group receiving the kava extract. No adverse effects were noted. Kava has recently become available as an herbal supplement
