Let's Discuss the "Dark Side" of r/Superstonk: Low-Effort Memes, Conspiratorial Thinking, Unrealistic Expectations, and the Valorization of Ignorance

  1. I agree and to piggyback off yours, my observation is that this sub represents all walks of life and has a little bit of Reddit in it’s entirety contained here. Desk jockeys, tradesmen, students, unemployed, car enthusiasts, gamers, only fans promoters, conspiracy theorists, left/centrist/right, boomers-kids, investors, degenerates, hobbyists, etc.

  2. I have to agree with you. Sometimes the posts being upvoted have zero evidence/basis and just sound like a shitty conspiracy theory.

  3. Speaking on 'posts by shills to make us look bad'. I saw a video a year or so ago that showed that you can pay some guy in NZ some $$ and he'd give you a tool that allows you to specify a post on Reddit and a number of votes, click a button and his bot net would give it the votes you specify. More votes cost more $$. Apparently that type of thing is reasonably common and so I'd bet it gets used here often enough to spread FUD or purposefully sabotage the collective image of the sub as a whole.

  4. I'm hijacking this post. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE LOAD OF SHIT! ON HERE HOURLY, SORT BY NEW. THE FUCK. No fucking comments. Really. You want better content, yet don't comment.

  5. That's a good point. There isn't enough high quality research and whatnot to keep this sub lively. Yet, I still want to distinguish between entertainment, and the items I complain about in my post.

  6. Here's the thing: the vast majority of others who are talking smack about GME & SuperStonk in general are just shills who are being paid to do so or are just butthurt that their predictions of GME going back to $5 have not & will never come true and they are pissed that their pride won't allow them to admit they fucked up so that they can buy in.

  7. I do not respect this take. I have been here a long time and watched this sub become cult like and moass is not a guarantee even based on the SEC new rules and even more so what happened with the LME

  8. I'm not completely denying the possibility of it, but has there ever actually been concrete proof of paid shilling against GME other than easily composed screenshots or anecdotal evidence? I haven't really seen any.

  9. I think we often want to remove the 'bad' and keep the 'good' but don't understand how the two are linked to begin with. The engagement that this subreddit has maintained for the better part of a year now may in fact due to those same low effort memes ..conspiratorial thinking. Yes there are elements of superstonk that give off cult vibes. That said those cult vibes have kept a really disparate group of people together through a lot. Not everyone in superstonk is like you...not everyone in superstonk is like me. I think one of the strengths of this is a kind of collective of individuals. The only things that link us together are buy/hold/ and perhaps DRS.

  10. This is kind of how it goes the longer this goes on. I don’t blame SS, or it’s users. We’ve been beaten down, gaslighted, and robbed of wealth. And the powers that be are laughing at us on TV every day. To expect us to hold together and not degenerate into apeness is asking a bit much. I blame the hedge funds. No ape should feel bad about who they are and how dumb they’ve become!

  11. I'm already seeing a lot of division on the post. I expected controversy. But I'm glad I can finally say my piece. Thanks to those who seem to agree.

  12. Your post mirrors many of my own sentiments and, in my opinion, accurately describes the state of the sub. New/Rising is constantly flooded with clickbaity images and (my least favorite) numerous reposts on the same topic/question to seed confusion and prevent us from converging on a single, truthful reference.

  13. As with all posts here, remember that shills, trolls, and malcontents are able to comment and vote here too. All one can really do is keep their own side of the street clean...

  14. If your wish is to enhance communication and thoughtful debate, shouldn't you also thank those who seem to disagree? Otherwise your post seems just a bunch of words hoping to extract confirmation bias for your views 🤔

  15. There's literally ZERO division here... Everyone is against what you're suggesting... Also sounds like you're price anchoring fud in the title "unrealistic expectations".

  16. Thank you for bringing this up and taking the risk of being downvoted. There are so many shameless low-effort posters repeating the same information, some have good intentions, some do not, and some are just lazy (I'm looking at you Pulte posters)

  17. Or they bring in ordinary people who would not normally have any interest in our markets. Legitimacy is what Wall Street has. We need something else if we are going to create widespread change. And the combination of insanely intelligent research, data, DD, and completely hilariously bad memes is something Wall Street cannot compete with. At any price.

  18. I don't dislike the ideas presented here, but somehow this organically formed group of misfits does a way better job at self-governance than most alphabet soup agencies. It would be a shame to guide it in any direct way. I appreciate the ideas here and hope the pods that needed to hear it did. I think the concept of valorizing ignorance is being misinterpreted from the language of people remaining humble and being careful not to guide the actions of others, but I can see how you could see it that way, or rather that others might see it that way. Due to hyperbole, people probably use the same exact wording to express "I'm learning", "im not a financial advisor " , or "I was literally born yesterday" and someone new to the page would never know which is which.

  19. This subreddit is what it is, I for one enjoy the levity provided by some of the memes. If people come here and don’t like the vibe that’s ok. They can filter by DD and get to what they want and skip the rest.

  20. I respect and agree with your opinion. I also started my journey in Jan last year and whilst I came for the opportunity to make some quick money, I have learnt a lot since then. I've held through the whole thing and havent sold a single share - actually 10x my holding and DRSd. No judgement OP for selling, you made a really rationale decision to recoup your investment. Because this sub is made up from a multitude different people across different age brackets and cultures, we are going to have a mix of voices. Just a part of having an open community where anyone can contribute to the conversation at any time. I would agree that we should steer away from the $100m per share floor or the MOASS is inevitable rhetoric and instead focus on the great stuff the company is doing and the long term value which will be returned to share holders. There is a ton of great content being made and we are getting plenty of good exposure. I think we are doing well enough to hit a broad audience

  21. Problem is when you and I joined in everything was fresh and was new DD every other day. Now when new people join they just see low effort hype posts with zero educational backing and cult like seeking out of anyone who disagrees

  22. It used to be a place of understanding how the market functions rather than a collective goal of locking a float without historical evidence of this ever resulting in a short squeeze only removing liquidity from the underlying. The pursuit of fair markets has turned into screams of crime at each turn rather and disecting the underlying mechanics of why or how. I used to truly look forward to weekends here , but there's so much conspiratorial thinking, hero worship and witch burning.

  23. While I respect your position I don't give a fuck about acceptance from anyone other than my close friends and family. Wallstreet, MSM, Banks, Hedgies, and the global markets at large can gargle my chode water. This sub is a gold mine of knowledge and hilarity. I am constantly surprised and amused by the content I find here. Any effort to restrict or reshape this sub would result in another great migration.

  24. Good post and some very good discussion in the comments. Unfortunately, I think you're either preaching to the choir here, or your message is falling on deaf ears. Those who agree with you will already be on board, and those who are doing the superfluous things you mentioned specifically--they aren't going to listen. Still, it's good to speak your mind. Good stuff, OP.

  25. Agreed. The weirdos and cringe low effort posters need to calm down. While annoying at times, I find it nice that the old sub filters out bullshit low effort postings

  26. We're a subreddit, not a community. Let people be people and bots be bots. Doesn't change the end game.

  27. $100,000,000 per share is just a way of saying that shorting a stock carries INFINITE risk…I don’t understand the thought that it is breaking it down to a get rich quick scheme.

  28. Thank you for making this post, as I (and I'm sure many others) have been thinking the same thing for a while -- especially with the conspiratorial posts. I've also come across some apes brigading in other non-stock based subs, and you see the string of replies, "you're in a cult" or "go back to bag holding." It's not a good look, and apes shouldn't be spamming other subs.

  29. IDK, I think Apes should do Ape shit. We sling shit, question everything, shove things places they don't go, support each other, and help each other grow. It is the mixture of everything that keeps me engaged and participating here. The DD is done, has been, I don't need Superstonk. I want to be here because I like what it is. No need to change or pressure other people to change. Upvote downvote as you see fit that is all the power anyone should have.

  30. I agree with the post. This is definitely a culty stock. For me, I actually got so wound up in this I had to take a step back from this sub and just get a better picture of things. This sub can suck you in and whip you around. But I’ve learned to filter. I can see how it might be hard for a newer investor to take it seriously until they have sifted threw the heaps of information (if they even bother)

  31. Valorization of Ignorance is a good observation but remember, there's a ton of impostors going around, promoting these bad qualities you mentioned in specific posts, as a weapon. low-quality, tone-deafness, ignorance, pettiness. Pulte has seen a lot of that. he was welcomed with suspicions and demands as if him and RC never interacted on twitter. and even after he bought in and promoted us like no one before, that still wasn't good enough for some. so he delivered proof. and that still wasn't the end of the FUD. ape skepticism is a good quality but it went way too far with Pulte because shills were pushing for it, still are, deliberately playing apes against each other mirroring our behaviors in the shittiest way, and at the wrong times.

  32. The fuck is this shit? Maybe you are new here so you don't know, but we would have never survived eight months of sideways trading acting like the boomer investing sub sitting here with sticks up our asses. Letting people say whatever they need to survive another day is what we are. You said all you needed when you said nobody has the right to define this sub.

  33. If someone doesn’t want to invest in GME because a bunch of people on the internets says it will hit $100 million per share, than I could give two shits about that person and their unwillingness to jump in. I am in the right play, and I am in the right sub (for now). Sorry if theu don’t want to be a part of history.

  34. Don't even have to read this, I can tell you didn't kiss enough ass in making your points by the downvote ratio. It's a real shame that most of the thickness to your skin needs to be against fellow apes not understanding the actual point and flinging poop instead.

  35. Something that’s been really frustrating me is how arrogant or condescending a lot of people spreading $gme can be, especially on Twitter, but even sometimes in the comments here some people act very smug. we want more people to see & join our stock, appearances are important.

  36. I kinda agree on this post, but to be fair, since all I have to do is buy, hold and DRS, the memes and shit posts keeps me entertained until then.

  37. Too late. This place is only good for news. Discourse is a nightmare and it's clogged with bullshit. Any contrary opinions are "fud" or "sus". It's painful.

  38. No, what OP said was "consider what is most healthy for everyone involved, whether they identify as part of the community or not."

  39. Have you been on Reddit, have you seen the average sub, Jesus I’ll accept some low effort memes and dubious DD (triple D’s y’all) in exchange for not having the toxicity of a lot of subs. Be tolerant, buy hodl win.

  40. $100,000,000 per share is just a way of saying that shorting a stock carries INFINITE risk…I don’t understand the thought that it is breaking it down to a get rich quick scheme.

  41. It’s a public forum, if we were taken seriously we’d be destroyed by big monies more than likely. It’s a populist movement for sure; if we are reckless with that fact as a community then it will be rough. Diligence is 🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑

  42. I don’t really care about any of this or any of you specifically, I just want to get paid. I wish these criminally sore losers would stop robbing me of my money and (more importantly) my time. As soon as I’m paid, I’ll gladly fuck off and never show my face here again.

  43. I’m so conflicted with this sub, because there are lots of nuggets of gold DD and the overall moral compass is great here. I have been discouraged from great DD writers getting pushed out of the sub. While I get the counter arguments, the DD is what gives this sub any sense of legitimacy and the pushing away of (particularly options writers) was counter productive in my opinion. This should be a place that encourages any and all serious efforts at DD, and any debate can be settled with better data analysis and better counterpoints. I suppose with any community you take the good with the bad. I’ve just learned to operate in this sub for the semi-frequent gold nuggets and kind of tune out the rest. I think there’s value in you bringing this up.

  44. Or you could stop being a Karen and let people enjoy their time on the sub, 95% of the low effort memes get drowned out in New, so you don't have to worry about.

  45. Tha kbyou for putting together a well thought out post. However in all respect, GET FUCKED. In the a polite friend punching you in the arm way. We are not a business, we are not the Borg. We are not a socialist group either. We are a complete eclectic group as pointed out below. If you try "crafting" the sub it will fail. If you try policing language for better optics it will destroy the sub. We are here because we don't care about how we are viewed. If we did we would of sold and gone about our life!! There are many things wrong with this sub however for every "conspiracy" their Is a logical response that shuts it down. The reason this place is so beautiful is because we are free here. To a degree. If you try police anything it is the start of a purity sprial that ends with us all unhappy and some fool "running" it. It needs to be organic and left to run. We are able to call each other out and correct what we feel is wrong. Just like you have. We need to be very careful about giving anyone power over this amazing place.

  46. Let’s not and say we did… shills don’t care they just do. Talking about it and flooding the sub with nonsense won’t fix anything.

  47. i think simply calling activity on the sub 'valorization of ignorance' is an incomplete, one-sided take. sure there are sophomoric jokes about intelligence, using phrases like eating crayons and smooth brains. but, at its core, here on

  48. Just regard scrolling through the "Low effort memes" as part of a game you have to play to get to the real "bounty" which is the solid DD and good posts.

  49. It’s the 6,7,8 figure prices often thrown around and defended completely seriously that makes me shake my head. You’re simply not going sell 1 share of GME for that much - it’s not gonna happen. 4 figs at current share count - yes. Low 5 figs is a stretch, but in the realm of remote possibility. Above that, it’s pure delusion.

  51. I would like to see a Dunning-Kruger award of some sort. Because some people get all carried away with their own (seeming) breakthroughs in understanding

  52. First of all You are the professional here I can hardly even type readable 🦍🏴‍☠️ I felt very welcomed into this community because of the memes and self acceptance of being…well “retarded” and I felt like (wow even me..a complete moron, can fit in here and possibly make a difference). Now after a year, of doing nothing more for this community then being able to offer a little hype or spread some love and learn how to be zen with the graph… I really appreciate the Come as you are attitude that this group embraces. I am pretty zen now and ALL IN I have an awesome Purple circle 🟣 collection and I think showing our hands like they are makes this community great !! 💩 🦍🏴‍☠️🚀🚀🚀

  53. At the risk of being down voted I humbly disagree with your opinion. I totally understand where you are coming from, yet from what I've seen SS has gained a lot of traction already with its existing mechanics. As you might think there is little worth in shit posting it does attract a typical type. It may sound silly, yet that's still one more person. Granted I love the DD, and the wrinkled brained apes. I also love the smooth brained crayon eaters silliness. Personally if I see a post that seems pointless to me I just keep scrolling. Just as there are a bunch of apes to share great information, there are those that can only offer comic relief, and those that have hope beyond hope. To me that's what makes SS awesome. I personally feel its wrong to stifle anothers words just to validate ourselves to others. Take what you need from the community and ignore what you dont. Thats my opinion. 🤷‍♂️

  55. Since you’re so open about your position (which I appreciate), would you mind sharing how many shares are in your name forever? To never be sold? Mine are personally at least 50%. No hedgie hands will touch them. I’m a low xxx holder myself since Jan 21 🦍

  56. I love Superstonk and all of its attributes. Even the “SuPeRsToNk Is CoNsPiRaCy ThEoRiStS” take. Apes just gonna keep apein and proving until and beyond MOASS straight into a whole new world.

  57. I full heartedly agree with these statements. However much like some discords (if you're familiar), when you bann certain content the chats will just die out. I do agree with the sub looking bad for newcomers. I've tried to show a handfull of people the whole gme saga, but when they tried to "use" superstonk, all they see is memes, some guys saying "no sell for less then 472.37293.0294.0372,- and purple cirkles. Newcomers are quite lost as to where to look...

  58. Get rich quick he says, ive been holding in the red for over a year and a half now and shit is starting to get real hard.

  59. I understand your point, but you must understand this sub belongs to none of us and all of us (us being used here to describe this collection of individualinvestors). I appreciate the DD just as much as a good shitpost, and frankly this place wouldn't be what it has become without both. I personally find all the "fOrUM iS slIDIng" posts to be the worst kind.... Just my 2 pence worth.

  60. The best stock/crypto communities resemble cults or have a cult like following. Tesla was the same but to a lesser degree
