Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse [Italy, 2021] (FFO: Gorguts)

  1. True avant-garde death metal, one of those albums were it’s genuinely super hard to wrap your head around what’s going on in a very alien way rather than just a bunch of bizarre but recognizable tones clashing.

  2. This is probably my AOTY. Ænigmatum are making a strong case for that title but I think Ad Nauseum are still up there.

  3. This is up there for me, but Suffering Hour instantly took number one early this year, and they are still holding. It’s been ages since I’ve heard a band with a legitimately original tone/sonic atmosphere that I also felt a deeply visceral connection to.

  4. This comes across to me like a mix of more modern artists like Artificial Brain and Pyrrhon, and I like both of those bands as well as Gorguts, so this is right up my alley.

  5. Nothing wrong with that at all. It’s very dense and swings hard. I’m glad you gave it a shot, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I happen to take my tea with two lumps of dissonant psychosis.

  6. Interestingly enough, I'm not a huge fan of Gorguts, but love this. The dissonance here is top-tier. Maybe it's because I listen to so much black metal? Not sure.

  7. The difference is Luc Lemay is 10 times the better songwriter than Ad Nauseam. This album is interesting for sure and loaded with all sorts of wonkiness, but it severely lacks in depth and personality IMO.

  8. Album of the year for me. I’m super picky and specific when it comes to metal these days, but this sounds incredible. Production is leagues ahead of everything else, too.
