There is an island called Ellis island in New Jersey a small portion is Owned by New York because it was originally New York’s island but they built it up to make it bigger but New Jersey thought they didn’t like that so they claimed it back and that have we have this wacky border

  1. To clarify because the explanation leaves out some details, after a long series of debates between New York and New Jersey, they agreed that Liberty Island (the island with the Statue of Liberty) and Ellis Island (this island) belonged to New York, but the river surrounding the islands belonged to New Jersey. The original shape of Ellis Island is the New York part, but then they built it up to what it is now. New Jersey noticed this and argued that the parts that New York built up rightfully belong to New Jersey because they owned the land under the water. That's why New Jersey has the parts they built up.
