Skeleton of a Pufferfish

  1. I assume the pufferfish evolved this extra-spiney skeleton for protection... But if some predator tried to take a bite of it, wouldn't the pufferfish die anyway? Even if the predator ended up with a sore mouth?

  2. Well yeah but now maybe that predator can’t effectively eat anymore, causing it to die. Its predator buddies see this happen and say “nah it’s not worth it” and don’t attempt to eat pufferfish. Risk vs reward, carried on for generations.

  3. It blows up many times it's size, so it won't fit in the mouth of many predators that first see it, and is uncomfortable for anyone that can actually take it in a single chomp. It seems to be quite effective.
