What makes a boss give an employee tough love?

  1. Depends on the meaning of "tough love", but I could imagine seeing potential for more success in the employee than what they're currently achieving, to push them to be better.

  2. Poor leadership skills. They view themselves as a parent or correctional officer to the employee (depending on how toxic the work culture is) instead of a professional in a higher position whose goal is to direct and prioritize. They either lack the skills necessary to do their job or they have a fundamental misunderstanding of their job.

  3. What’s tough love, exactly? That could be interpreted in many ways bad. I think in constructive criticism it’s a matter of style, but respect and some notion that somebody is capable of different things and potential might be among reasons. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be there.
