Why do you think everything leans left?

  1. What do you think about the idea that the larger the organization the more it tends left because more perspectives come into play; while the more homogenous the group, the more it tends towards conservativism because everyone agrees more?

  2. In the US, academics who identify as Democrats outnumber Republicans by five to one. In the liberal arts, the ratio is eight to one. In sociology, the ratio is 44 to one.

  3. I would agree a lot of cultural institutions are leftist - Universities, Media, Entertainment, Publishing. I think what has changed is these industries the have always been left leaning. But as the left has become more intolerant of different views over the last 2 decades and more self righteous about their own views, the leftists in those institutions have driven out and refused to hire anyone who does not share their views, or would oppose their views, so institutions that have traditionally been left leaning have devolved into left dominated.

  4. Wouldn't the argument just be that the old timers have simply already been placated so they don't need to complain? Not complaining isn't exactly something I associate with any group at all in the US.

  5. If you spend all your time on Reddit, in academia, or in spaces dominated by liberalism, and purposely surround yourself with people who lean left, it will indeed seem that everything leans left.

  6. I am in a leftist bubble and even the self identified leftists here aren’t as left-leaning as they think. I’ve gotten into heated debates with people hear about it, and don’t bring it up because I want people to be honest about what they think.

  7. You have a point but there is a reason for it. Right wing media is, in most cases, utterly biased to the point of being propaganda. I know you may say the same of MSM but there really is no comparison. One leans left, the other is stridently right. MSM may favor one side but will usually at least show both sides of an argument. Right wing media exists to demonize "the left" and galvanize "the right." Thus, it is difficult to consume right wing media unless you are already agreeing with it.

  8. I think there's a bit of mislabeling here. Leaning left (to me) means more leftist economic policy, less culture stuff (other than the occasional "borders are racist" debate). Leaning liberal is 95% of the problem, liberal-inclined media platforms are the ones pushing for a race war from their posh New York penthouse suites while leftists are actually out there volunteering in soup kitchens and building temporary shelters for the poor.

  9. "Science based" lol. The left sets up all kinds of studies and research to justify their political stances...this is an effort to appeal to conservatives who use logic instead of emotion to guide their thinking. Of course, the studies are all bullshit. Cite more, please.

  10. Or maybe science is like actually a thing? I mean you can't exactly claim to be about "logic and reason" when research doesn't agree with your stances. I agree that there's politics involved in subjective fields like "gender studies" and they are complete BS. But many on the right don't even seem to think climate change is really a thing and vaccines are some conspiracy for power.

  11. I disagree with the premise. The perception of the left lean is because they have the loudest voices. They are very emotional about things. The right remains silent. I'm sure folks have heard of the Silent Majority.

  12. That’s actually totally false. It’s the exact opposite there are many different science based research articles where scientist studied the brain function of liberal and conservative patients and studied their brain wave patterns and hemisphere activity as they that worked to answer questions and discovered that those whom identify as conservative use their Amygdala vastly! More often than the liberals; wasn’t even close and that the liberals used their pre frontal cortex vastly more than the conservatives. The Amygdala is responsible for most of our emotions and the pre frontal cortex is responsible for critical thinking and long term decision making. You can research these studies

  13. "Everything" is a bit of an exaggeration, but certainly the majority of 'popular culture'. Leftist thinking is not unique in having an undercurrent of "I am right" or "I am a good person". Almost everything humans believe has a degree of that. Of course we are speaking in sweeping generalities, as we must when discussing all of humanity. The biggest difference between left and right is that the leftists feel compelled to demonstrate publicly their sense of superiority. They are not 'modest'. Their willingness to advertise generates a lot of 'public' noise, while Conservatives are generally less inclined to that kind of advertising. Over time, the noise pushes out most who are not also vocal in their support of the noisy people.

  14. From the recent twitter Project Veritas video. Companies know you can do things to the right, and they generally do nothing. If you go against the left, they attack your advertisers. They go after everything in your history to ruin you. Look at Musk, he starts being pro right. A 25-year-old allegation appears out of nowhere.

  15. The media leans left because the left is more emotion based than the right (or at least they were pre-Trump). Corporations lean left because they fear loss of income that would come with opposing the media.

  16. You can research these studies. These companies lean left because they group think which decreases your chances of emotional thinking and they think long term and critically what’s best even if they may feel different. They more so align with liberal views this way and thinking patterns. Decision made for other people should be though out critically not emotionally.

  17. You're confusing a perspective that takes others needs into account for being more emotional. In fact it's often the opposite. The more emotionally we react to things the more we can't make room to take others needs and perspectives into account.

  18. There’s a lot more liberals than conservatives in this country, and there’s no “electoral college” for the media. The media is going to align with the interests of the majority pretty much every single time.

  19. Conservatives don't feel like they have a mission to make society and culture conform to their political beliefs. So you'll never see a conservative suggest their workplace do a "victims of communism" banner or moment of silence or hire an educator on the second amendment for "community building". But for a leftist the personal is political and so its not even a second thought to them to suggest management hire a "diversity coordinator" or put up a "pride" billboard in the breakroom.

  20. Because the names of initiatives and bills sound virtuous and moral when you take them at face value, even if they don’t work or makes sense in real life.

  21. It’s a very easy and obvious answer: Censorship. Liberal ideas and Leftist ideas need censorship to survive because they aren’t based on rational thought, truth or reality.

  22. I don't think everything leans left, but I do think there is a heavy bias towards the left in a lot of areas. I believe this originates from the education system, but that is a much more entangled and different discussion.
