''Don’t forget to spend some money in a good lock''. Best piece of advice! It is not uncommon to find yourself in the situation that your lock is more expensive than your bike.
If you are planning to go outside of Amsterdam a lot, consider a 'daluren abonnement'. For 5 euros per month, you get 40% discount on your trip during the 'daluren' (weekdays 0.00 - 6.30, 9.00 - 16.00 and 18.30 - 0.00. During the weekends and holidays, you get the discount all day). I believe this is only when you are travelling with NS.
Free public transport is only for Dutch students. If you want to get a cost free ov as a forgein study, you should then get a job with at least 16h a week, than you get it for free
Get a second hand bike you can get a descent one for 50-100 euros. For the longer distances tram and metro are your friend.
Is 8 km cosidered a long distance in Amsterdam?
Buy a secondhand bike. Swapfiets is crazy expensive in the long run.
Watch out for stolen bikes on e.g. Facebook or Marktplaats. If you buy one you commit a crime.
Hola.
Wow, thank you very much!!! That was really helpful. I am really looking forward to getting started there.

It’s funny that you use ‘legitimate seller’ and ‘Fietspiraat’ in almost the same sentence haha.
student OV international
Thanks!!
Stolen bikes can be checked against a national register here:
Yeah, but who reports their stolen bike?
Definitely a bike, but if you prefer public transport as a student it's free! You need a personal OV card and apply for it via DUO
My advice would be to just cycle.
