I'm not gonna repeat the shows that have already been talked about because I already agree with most of the recommandations that have been given here, but I'd recommand Dark which hasn't been mentionned yet. It's indescribably good and possibly the best written show I've watched. The ideal is to go in with no spoilers or expectations at all. I'd say try at least 3 episodes and then you'll know if you're hooked or not. (Oh also, it's a german show so as always, I'd advise the original version, meaning with german voices).
I haven't heard of 12 Monkeys yet, and I'm definitely gonna check it out. As for Steins;Gate, I had started it a few years ago, and I think I had watched around 6 or 7 episodes, but I kind of dropped it because it was a bit too slow for my taste and I didn't have that much time back then ; I'm probably gonna watch it soon tho. (So I already know what Steins;Gate and Dark have in common, and why this isn't really so off-topic :pp)
Gabe's gonna have a hard time, but presumably he still had human adult caretakers, be they his actual parents or otherwise, who can see to him thru the loss. TM may even recruit him in the absence of Samaritain. He can learn and grow and come out happy and healthy in a few years time.
