Can someone please ELI5 how this kind of psychotic explosion can even happen? It's horrifying to see this happen in our city. Is it a lack of maintenance of the gas lines? Is it something that can just happen suddenly, or are there signs of it that people can look for? Isn't the gas supposed to have a distinct smell so that people have some warning of a leak? It would be great if someone could use this tragic event to educate us a bit so this doesn't happen again.
