Small brass box (approx. 20x13 cm / 8x5"). When opened up there is an extra lid, which opens as well. Underneath the lid there are five compartments, four round ones of approx. 3.5 cm / 1.5" diameter and one rectangular one in the middle. The compartments are not very deep (approx. 1.5 cm / 0.5")

宮尾 Literally just " Miyao" but as for the third kanji I am at a loss.

Could the last one possibly be a maker's mark instead of a kanji?
Looks like a Paan Daan - Betel Nut Box, indeed from India.
Solved!
My title describes the thing. The box was brought as a souvenir by my grandparents in the early 1990s but its most likely older. The box could be from India because they travelled there a lot during this time. I've been looking into masala spice boxes but they traditionally are round and contain deeper compartments that can be removed individually.

You should speak to your contact at Ausländerbehörde and ask them to allow you to join an Integrationskurs. This is by far the cheapest and best option to get to do a German intensive course. If you don't have written confirmation from Ausländerbehörde you will have to pay 3-4 times the price. The Integrationskurs can be done in many institutions. They will give you a list with the letter. I would highly suggest you do it through Volkshochschule.
