These came from a 35g and are already a colony, I'm totally new to them so I'm not sure who the actual pair is or how to tell. There's one gold barb in there with swim bladder issues that I was told has been in there for years. I do have spare tanks in case of aggression. I'm curious if I could add more gold barbs or another fish like tetras that would stay towards the top and be able to escape aggression. Or something like the synodontis cat, but when I was researching I saw them being aggressive towards each other. Thank you for the advice!
Synodontis like Petricola are perfect. Barbs are active and stand a chance though I have never attempted such a mix myself. I definitely would not do any calm river fish like tetras or rasboras, but giant danios might be an upper water option...

I'll look at giant danios, Im also researching tiger barbs with cichlids and seeing mixed results
