For me it's the idea that if you say their name in a room of say 20 people at least 6 or 7 will know who you're talking about. They have a certain amount of name recognition. I would bet most people reading this comment know who William Fichtner is but they don't know his name. You could say you had lunch with him to a group of your friends and they'd probably think he was a friend of yours they haven't met yet.
