  1. I understand it’s a stupid question asking why a racist had an irrational hatred for a group of people but why did he? Aren’t a lot of Swiss people German? Or was it more a hatred for their culture and neutrality?

  2. I think he mainly didn't like that he couldn't pull off an Anschluss of Switzerland, despite as you say many Swiss people having German heritage and German language. The political hostility toward Hitler's ambitions + general coexistence of languages and cultures within Switzerland would definitely be a frustration to Nazi ideology, coupled with the fact that Switzerland could maintain such a strong defence that invading it was never a practical idea.

  3. spain was a new player, and probably the one and only female player of eu4 lol but yeah, it was a really bad game for her

  4. I mean they were Hungarian Jewish immigrants not mestizo

  5. It seems like a lot of people don't realise that pretty much any Central and South American country can also be described as a "nation of immigrants" with people from all around the world. There is a Welsh colony in Argentina for example, and Peru had a Japanese president/dictator.

  6. The decades of performative, public guilt regarding the Holocaust reads to me as a country exceedingly grateful that someone else - Palestinians - paid the price for them. We do not see the same guilt about Namibia, Poland, or former Soviet states, and it is not forbidden within Germany to call for the end of any of these countries.

  7. I'm fine with ironman not being required. I very rarely save scum but I can't sit here and say I never do.

  8. Sharpeville Massacre - Apartheid-era police killed 60+ and injured 150 more people protesting the internal passport laws that tried to restrict the movement of black people.

  9. I just hope all of Namibia (except Walvis Bay) is not wasteland this time lol. It's not completely unjustified or anything, but it is kind of sad to see the smallest Euro microstates represented while basically an entire modern country is not shown at all!

  10. You really should start smaller and I say that with absolutely no disrespect. Start with one of the time-sensitive achievements, like the Toungoo Empire or Basque in Glory, then maybe try one of the more infamous ones like Eat Your Greens or True Heir of Timur. These can give you the idea of what it's like to conquer at a rapid pace if you haven't tried them already.

  11. In a way, this is the best news I've seen all season following the Raptors. Anything to put heat on sport betting is a win in my book, it is probably overly optimistic but a few more of these kinds of things coming to light and we may no longer need endure 10,000 betting adverts in one match.

  12. One of the sad things about being a non-American in the online Anglosphere is you see pretty much everything remotely popular become about them, and so they become an audience to be mindful of in most cases (even if not the primary audience).

  13. Kilwa or Mali for me. Interested to see what they do with Africa for this game.

  14. It's not too common to see non-Israelis use this sort of fascist idiocy, but it was actually what Italy used to justify colonising Libya in the early 20th century - it used to be Roman land, you know!

  15. That 05/06 season was the first year I really started paying attention to the NBA. I say with 100% sincerity that the outlook then was not this bleak lmao.

  16. This is probably as grim as the Raptors have been since trading Vince Carter away for nothing after he tanked his trade value.

  17. Decolonization™ is about performative action like toppling statues and not about improving the material condition of people they fighting for. Like they said they want to burn down everything but with an asterisk.

  18. This was so plainly evident in North America in 2020. I don't think there was a massive amount of revolutionary potential within the Black Lives Matter movement, but it was so frustrating that whatever radicalism did exist got channelled into painting murals, establishing commemorative holidays, and tearing down fascist statues.

  19. IDK how Republicans gain working class voters over the next 5-10 years with moves like these.

  20. Luckily for them, workers in the US generally have next-to-no class consciousness and will not even realise how bad they have it. It helps that democrats generally will not offer any major resistance - as evidenced by their complete capitulation to both "right to work" and at-will employment.

  21. I said this before and I’ll say it again, but the internet will experience a border control phase, like what happened in real life with countries. China is just ahead of everyone else.

  22. I hate that you are probably completely correct about this. The internet has heaps of absolute garbage but one of the best parts has always been getting to interact with and learn from people all around the world.

  23. Love the write-up! I only got the opportunity to play today and I've beat two of the scenarios and played around with a few more.

  24. Honestly getting very tired/burned out of the continuous and seemingly never ending 2nd chance/returning champ/tournament.

  25. The second chance/wildcard was horrendous television that I barely watched, but the ToC rocked and I think this should be good too. I definitely get the complaint if you have watched all these tournaments all season but I'm happy to be coming off a nice long break and seeing super high level play.

  26. It's hard to think of too many people in history who have been more deserving of getting fired after 1 day on the job. Jeopardy is obviously more than just who hosts it, but if he had won out I am not completely convinced the show would still be on air right now, or at least it would be in a much more precarious position. I, for one, would've never watched another episode.

  27. It's completely crazy to me that there are people younger than AoE2 who play it, and are essentially the best in the world at it. That's probably the best testament imaginable to the game's longevity!

  28. The plan for the US was always to dismantle and cripple Russia post-USSR. Russians, like a majority of people living in post-communist states, tend to view that era more favourably than people in the west realise and a large part of it is because of how brutal the new order imposed upon them in the 90s was.

  29. I would think Germany killed more people than Japan, right?

  30. It's actually probably fairly close, though the Japanese atrocities tend to be relatively overlooked. For example, you can find death tolls ranging between 3-4 million for Indonesia under Japanese occupation, yet I don't think I've ever seen anyone discuss this.

  31. Honestly I like mission trees. I enjoy the historical flavour and having concrete goals to work towards. The bonuses have gotten a little outrageous in recent updates but that's something that can be fixed. Making the click to finish a particularly challenging or rewarding mission is one of the most satisfying parts of the game for me.

  32. This story happened in 2011. It's scary to think that they are due to become great-grand parents in just a couple years now.

  33. Casually racist europeans trying to get over the fact that a bunch of extremely based Haitian slaves overthrew and killed colonizing European cunts in the most brutal way possible. This goes against their narrative of their "race" being superior.

  34. The western cope around the Haitian revolution goes far beyond the generic crying and Red Scare baiting they've employed against the USSR (and China) for 100 years and into an outright savage and genocidal territory. Western powers have colluded to completely neutralise and destroy Haiti over the course of nearly 250 years. Anything awful that comes out of this latest breakdown of Haitian government should come with this fact as vital context.
