Why do you want an encoder for the shooter?
We want to control the speed
Teach them about geometric design and tolerances
Look at old FRC games, challenge them to design a mechanism for a specific part of the game, or even a whole robot depending on their interest/skill level
Make the game as boring for them as possible. Just sit in fountain or go to lanes they aren't in.
