I don't have much, but I would pay attention to say..Iron Maiden, they do it, I believe Molly hatchet or 38 special did way back...you probably need to pick a determined route, so to speak...everyone plays the same thing most of the time, or put parts together like pearl jams guitarist do. I know its not much but maybe can be a starting point to look at your situation

It depends on what kind of wood you use, what kind of paint, what kind of clear coat and how you want the final result to look and feel. Some woods need a lot of sanding and grain filler, others don't. Some paints go on in one coat, others need sanding in between multiple coats, etc.

He prolly means a leather strap where you have 3-4 different knobs for heights. If that is the case just let em be I would say

Alder, mahogany and basswood are the most commonly used woods for non-transparent finishes.
