I would argue he mostly ran as a democrat since their party views aligned more with his and people are more party loyal than candidate loyal usually. So, if he had won the democratic primary then even people who might have not specially liked him would have voted for him anyway because of party affiliation.

Plus we got some decent prospects out of the deal too, idk what people who were disappointed with the trade were expecting? Guentzel for Mcdavid? I know it’s a hyperbole but you get the idea. Plus all of that for Guentzel as a pure rental, I know it’s probably a fantasy but for all we know Guentzel could re-sign here in a few months if he really wanted to.
Personally I want Gukesh to win but seeing a tiebreak against Fabi would be the most entertaining so I’m also rooting for that
