Having just gone through this finding my own dad's bike this summer anything can help point you in right direction.
Just stay in first gear for now, as you practice it. No brakes needed. All clutch. At least that’s how I was taught in my MSF course. First gear and clutch helps you control your speed without ever having to touch the throttle or brakes (except before you approach the turn)
Some light amount of rear brake pressure can make the bike more stable at low speeds. It's not required, but definitely makes things easier.

I've ridden probably 60+ different motorcycles just from what you say here. And I don't have an issue with letting someone else I know ride mine. But a lot of people would never consider letting a friend ride their bike. It's bizarre to me but I have seen a lot of people who operate that way.
I agree with Silly for the most part. Only thing I'd add is that it depends on your riding experience vs what your friend's bike is. Obviously in your case your experience is limited so even a friend might not be AS willing.
