The few schools that have gone on strike do have Paras as part of the teachers union and not only are the teachers fighting for themselves, but they are fighting for their paras as well. In my district we are currently working without an upcoming contract, because the district was taking five paid days away from us and only willing to give us a $.30-$.70 raise for next year

  23. I didn't understand how hard teachers work until I met my now fiancee. She's a kindergarten teacher with BPS. During the school year she is gone at 6 am and comes home at 8 pm. And when she's home, it is not uncommon that a parent is on the phone with her. Teachers absolutely work hard. She also purchases clothes, water bottles, snacks, crayons, etc for her most at need students too. During her lunch break she is preparing for meetings or sitting with a disciplined student. She's on for hours everyday without a moment of down time.

  24. It seems like teaching is no longer a respected profession in society. As far as I'm aware salaries haven't changed all that much from when I was in school over 20 years ago.

  28. While I agree with you sentiment, sports stadiums generates more money as well as other perks. There is a whole network of other businesses that rely on sports vs health care/hospitals.

I believe there was a report on the economic impact of tax payer funded football stadiums that came out in recent years which stated the positive impact on an area is actually pretty minimal considering the stadium is used maybe 30 days out of the year including nfl games, college, concerts, etc.
