An IBCLC is board certified. We take a proctored exam at Pearson Vue. A CLC is a step down from that, it doesn't require health classes like the IBCLC does

Hello, Lactation Consultant here. When we consult with people who have had bariatric surgery, we recommend to take B12, iron, and vit D due to decrease in ability to absorb micronutrients. We often see a decrease in milk supply due to the body recovering from surgery or illness. Milk supply decrease can happen when the body is fighting an acute infection such as mastitis or covid. We also know that lactogenesis II can be delayed from surgery such as a c-section. Therefore, I suspect that you will see a decrease, but generally the supply can bounce back. Remember, it takes an extra 500 - 700 calories a day for milk production - keep that in mind! My suggestion is to work with a Lactation Consultant or a Breastfeeding Medicine Dr. To help come up with a plan. The plan may include extra pumping to increase demand on the supply, or pumping before the surgery to build a store for when you have your surgery. Please, work with a qualified consultant to help you and guide you.
