Yes, the first demonstration with nanite disabled is clearly not how a dev would do it traditionally, they would make LODs. However, I think we are still moving toward rendering most geometry with nanite in UE5, even for stylized games like Fortnite that don't use cinema-quality, scanned assets, because all of it is serialized on the GPU (fast af), solves most popping issues, and cuts the labor of authoring LODs by hand.
