From what I read, they defaulted because the loan from JPM was backed by the discounted value of their in stock inventory. BBBY is required to periodically report on that inventory. Apparently, the latest reported inventory shows that the value was less than the loan value and due to the agreement, BBBY had to immediately pay the difference in cash. They didn't pay so this is what they defaulted on.
Hmm. Interesting. So essentially the expected collateral wasnāt enough to cover the loan so the lender wanted them to put up cash for collateral to make up for the shortfall.
Iām nowhere near a market/financial expert, but if thatās the case, then would this not be expected? From what Iāve read on the Q4 status of most retail companies, itās a big inventory purchasing quarter for them. If BBBY worked to remove all of the old product and then re-upped for new inventory, then wouldnāt their available collateral be lower since they now have lower quantities of the old inventory? Or, is the new inventory taken into consideration?
Yes good point. The CEO recently said that they used cash from 4th quarter to purchase inventory, so this may have killed two birds with one stone. Put them back into good standing with their loan/collateral and gave them product to sell and profit from.
