VW parts website show that at least for a mk7 the ball joints are the same for a gti and r, when did that change?

You’re right, it should be better since from the factory they’re bad. Many people have had their sunroofs replaced and had it look straight from the factory

My inlaws went through it in their MK7. It depends HIGHLY on the shop doing the work.

Never said it was always better but if it’s not on par with factory or better it needs to be redone
