Put it in a 5 gallon Bucket, put water on top and cover it with plastic or a 5 gallon bucket top, it will last months When you go to reuse it pour out the water and mix it up with a drill and a mixer bit! Always clean the inside of the bucket with a tile sponge to get the mud completely off the inside or it will harden up and if it falls into the good stuff it’s a problem
I would take that ceiling piece down and tell them to try again until the get it right!!! F- the gap, The gap will fill with mud, but the edges are not level that will look like shit after it’s finished Re hang it

Happens all the time, they need to come back and back fill the holes! Make sure if they or you do it that the Mudd gets mixed with a drill motor!

It looks to me like they did drywall Mudd work and did not let the Mudd dry prior to painting it, also they didn’t prime it first!
